R.I.P BOXING?

Boxing is in my opinion the best and most exciting sport in the world, its a sport that has created many legends, legends like Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, and one of my personal favorites Mike Tyson, unfortunately Boxing, in recent years has sold out, countless champions from every division makes it easy for modern day Boxers to avoid fighting anyone they think is a threat and still be a world champion. Many people make the mistake of thinking there are no good boxers in the world anymore, they are wrong! Floyd Mayweather, Sergio Martinez and Manny Pacquiao are or were brilliant boxers and Manny Pacquiao in particularly has been brilliant for the sport, the Klitschko brothers are brilliant heavyweights and sportsmen, they would have a chance against any of the all time great heavyweights, “but they are boring” American boxing fans say, American boxing fans are wrong, the Klitschko’s opponents are usually so outclassed by the Klitschko’s it makes a boring fight, it is not the Klitschko brothers brothers fault that no one can even give them a good fight. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao had a brilliant opportunity to add some much needed excitement to the sport, but greed and boxing politics means the fight that is now well past its sell by date anyway and will probably never happen. Pay per view, to many boxing organizations/champions and boxing politics have all contributed to the massive fall in public interest in boxing, boxing has to change or it will soon be dead.

If boxing had only one organization that controlled it, and one or no more than two champions per weight division ( it used to have one champion per division) the sport would benefit massively, it would force the best boxers and their greedy promoters to fight the better quality opponents instead of picking the easiest route to win one of many world titles. Boxing like many other sports is being killed by greed. Boxing is and always has been a working class mans sport, but the $50 HBO pay per view price in America and the £15 pay per view Sky Box Office price in Britain is stopping millions of potential viewers and boxing fans (including me) from watching and following the sport and therefore killing the sport.
